What does "Today's Dollars" mean?

Each year's RMD is a nominal amount — the actual dollars you'll withdraw and owe taxes on. But a dollar 20 years from now buys less than a dollar today. The "Today's Dollars" column discounts each future RMD back to present value using your inflation assumption. This doesn't project tax rate changes — it answers: "What is this future withdrawal worth in today's purchasing power?" Since tax brackets have historically been indexed to inflation, this gives you a clearer picture of the real economic impact of each distribution.

This calculator is intended for informational and general educational purposes only and is not individualized tax, legal, or investment advice. It does not account for changes in tax laws, investment returns, inflation, or personal financial circumstances. RMD rules can be complex and may change. This calculator uses the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table (effective 2022) and assumes the account is not subject to a different distribution table (e.g., eligible designated beneficiary, spousal exception with >10-year younger spouse as sole beneficiary, inherited IRA rules, etc.).

Inputs and assumptions (rates of return, timing of withdrawals, tax impacts, fees, and account behavior) materially affect results. Verify all calculations and consult qualified professionals before acting.
